Deep Encouter

Deep Encounter is a floating pavilion built for the biennale „sonsbeek20→24: force times distance ⏤ on labour and its sonic ecologies“. It serves as a social gathering space and seeks to give equal consideration to both humans and nature in the park. The floating pavilion exists in nature but outside of its rules. Aside from the fact that it floats, the pavilion takes on a very artificial character. The round polygon shape of the Pavilion, a crystal-like constellation of triangles, is meant to emphasise its man-made qualities—floating starkly just off the shore of Grote Vijver, the park’s biggest pond.

Love is risk, love is beauty, love is decision, love is a permanent challenge. It’s about discovering, leaving behind, opening up, letting in and caring for. It’s transformative, it’s an adventure and a zone de repos (place to rest).

Love is not a stable condition but a fluid relationship, that is recreated each day. It is a possibility.

Instances of Urban Practice

Instances of urban practice is about shifting the perspective in architecture: from the built object to architectural practice, from thing or final outcome to a qualified process – architecture as a series of actions that takes a societal position.

With instances of urban practice raumlabor presents two environments that are currently in the process of being negotiated on site, where raumlabor is involved within a diverse network of collaborators as initiator, negotiator, space-creator, mediator and caretaker. FLOATING e.V.

FLOATING UNIVERSITY e.V.

In 2018, Floating University Berlin was initiated by raumlabor as a temporary inner-city laboratory for collective, experiential learning and transdisciplinary exchange.

The founding year of the Floating University saw a diverse breadth of visitors involved to varying degrees with the activity on site, creating a unique ecosystem. The program consolidated a network of practitioners, who towards the end of 2018 decided to continue the experiment by transitioning from a ‘temporary’ project into an association: Floating University e.V.

Making Futures School

Over the course of two weeks, over 150 participants took part in a diverse curriculum convened by practitioners in the field of spatial practices. Acting as a non-disciplinary learning environment, the School proposes, designs, builds, negotiates, maintains, performs and celebrates an educational and convivial space in and around Haus der Statistik, Berlin. At the same time, it becomes a dynamic actor within a process of urban transformation, serving as a common sphere of action between participants, neighbors and civic society.

Theatre of Flows

In the Theatre of Flows, raumlaborberlin staged a journey through the real world of Taiwan as a performative learning landscape. Here the island took the shape of a system where resources, energy and man-power flowed in and out. They looked upon subjects that were in relation to the interconnectivity of flows in the urban and natural environment: ocean waste and the fishing industry of Keelung Harbor, the 2581 ponds of an irrigation system developed by the Japanese in the city of Taoyuan and the oyster farming community vs the largest private plastic refinery in the coastal areas of Yunlin. The collection of facts, figures, embodied knowledge and encounters with local experts on their expedition were later presented in a performative format. The project used the old army dormitory at Taipei’s Contemporary Culture Lab (C-lab) as a research station where material was collected, discussed and showcased.

Like a stranded container it stands there. A slight unshaped figure with a corrugated surface, in the old basin of Frihamnen. The sauna gives vitality, contributes to new life and a new future. With its zest for life and will to create, the sauna becomes more than just a creative haven it also becomes a vitamin injection for the whole town.

The sauna building is also one of 4 nominees for the Kasper Salin-priset 2015 , the National Swedish Architecture Award.

House of Time

Situated in an unlikely pocket along a canal in Bruges—one of the few remaining industrial sites in the historical port city—the project reprograms and reactivates this factory area into a sphere of collective imagination, action, and transformation. The project evolves slowly over time: developed in collaboration with local youth, the House of Time enables them to work together to find solutions to social and community problems through discussions, experiments, and the act of living together. The project is part of the Bruges Triennial 2018: Liquid City, for the duration of which the place is open to all.
