Die Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. Ein enormes Erbe der „Industriekultur“. Die Industrie ist weg, es bleibt die Kultur. Jedes Jahr zieht hier für sechs Wochen die Ruhrtriennale ein. Sie findet zwar verteilt über das Ruhrgebiet statt, aber hier ist die Zentrale.

Jedes Jahr zieht hier für sechs Wochen die Ruhrtriennale ein. Sie findet zwar verteilt über das Ruhrgebiet statt, aber hier ist die Zentrale. Sie belebt die ehrwürdigen Monumentalarchitekturen einer Zeit, in der noch klar war, worum es geht: um Kohle und Stahl. Das ist heute nicht mehr so. Jetzt geben Kunst und Kultur regelmäßig neue Hinweise darauf, wo die Reise hingehen könnte. Dazu gehört auch die Ruhrtriennale die Jahr für Jahr ein immenses Arsenal an Potenzialen, Ideen, Ergänzungen, Verweigerungen und Zerstreuungen produziert 

 

Für die nächsten drei Jahre wird raumlaborberlin den Platz vor der Jahrhunderthalle neu gestalten. Da wir auch nicht sagen können wie der Raum aussieht, in dem die neue Unklarheit des Ruhrpotts kultiviert werden kann, bauen wir für third space drei Versuchsaufbauten, jeweils eine pro Jahr.

Der Bauprozess: Roadmap 2018-2019-2020

 

Bauphase 23.07. – 19.08. 2018

 

Wir haben auf dem Kleinanzeigen-Markt ein Set an Bauelementen erworben, die wir  jedes Jahr neu zusammensetzen können. Wie bei einem alten Baukasten kommen Dinge aus anderen Bausätzen dazu, die nicht passen. Fremdkörper, die keinen Zusammenhang haben. Im ersten Jahr sind das ein paar Flugzeug- und Omnibusteile, Stühle verschiedener Fußballstadien und ein paar alte Seecontainer. Im Bauprozess entstehen so ständig Fragen von Verbindungen, die eine Neuinterpretation zulassen. Die Bauzeit ist daher erste Phase der gemeinsamen Forschung nach Möglichkeiten, mit der neuen Unklarheit klarzukommen. Diskutieren und bauen, Schrauben und Worte suchen.

 

 

 

 

 

Bauen, Spekulieren, Aneignen

 

Schon während des Baus haben wir darum Bochumer_innen und Festivalbesucher_innen eingeladen, mit uns zu bauen und zu spekulieren. In der zweiten Phase geben wir den Raum frei zur Aneignung. Alle, die Ideen haben, können Third Space öffentlich nutzen. So entstehen in drei Jahren drei unterschiedliche Set-ups, die über den Veranstaltungszeitraum der Triennale mit neuen Formen urbaner Praxis gefüllt werden.

THIRD SPACE – A HOME FOR NEW UNCERTAINTIES 

Decommissioned in parts disassembled airplanes serves,  new recombined, as the festival centre of the Ruhrtriennale 2018I2019I2020.

Jahrhunderthalle – the hall of the century – in Bochum, an enormous heritage of the industrial culture of the Ruhr area. The industry has vanished, the culture stayed. Every year for six weeks “Ruhrtriennale“ moves in here. The biggest art festival of the region happens in many sites across the area. But here it´s the center. The aim of the Festival is the revitalisation of the monumental architecture of a time when it was still clear what it was all about: steal and cole. This is no longer the case: arts and culture regularly give indications in which direction the journey will be heading. Year by year „Ruhrtriennale“ produces a large arsenal of potentials, ideas, appliances, denials and distractions.

For the next three years, raumlaborberlin will redesign the square in front of the Jahrhunderthalle.We too, cannot foresee what the space should look like, that gives a new home to cultivate a handling with the new uncertainty of the Ruhr area. So we build three different experimental set-ups, one per annum

 

 

The construction process: Roadmap 2018I2019I2020

 

Construction period 23.07. – 19.08. 2018

 

On a large online second hand marketplace we bought a set of objects that can be reassembled each year. Just like an old construction kit that got complemented by elements from other boxes, they don´t belong together. Strange objects that have no connection get assembled to something new. This year we have parts of airplanes, busses, shipping containers and seats from different football stadiums. Questions of connections permanently pop up in the construction process. That way the building phase becomes a research for modes to handle the new uncertainty. Discussing and  building, looking for screws and looking for words. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Building, speculating, appropriating

 

During the building phase we invite the people of Bochum and the visitors of the festival to join in, to build and speculate with us. After the opening we open up the space for appropriation. Everyone who has an idea to make space public can use third space. This way we create three different set-ups in three years during the Triennale, that get filled with new forms of urban practice.
