URBAN SCHOOL RUHR
2016 –
‚City as Campus‘ is the Urban School Ruhr’s (USR) motto. As a learning platform and a pedagogical experiment, USR investigates participative and artistic practices in urban space. It is envisioned as an independent public institution and an assembly of individuals gathered together around a declared common interest.

As an educational framework, USR offers its students face-to-face encounters with a wide array of cultural and spatial producers. Using collaborative teaching models and diverse formats, it seeks to foster reciprocity and engagement in the process of learning.

During its spring and summer sessions, the USR curriculum comprises field trips to European cities (Paris, Marseille, Athens and Liverpool) and following these ­during autumn­ an Open Programme, that takes place in the cities of Witten and Hattingen in the Ruhr Region. The Open programme is articulated around in three departments: Spaces of Learning, Practices of Commoning and Intervention as Strategies. Part of this Programme is carried out by USR staff, alongside invited tutors. However, reflecting its open spirit, the Programme also allows anyone with a proposal to join and contribute to part of the curriculum.

USR is free and open for all.

„Stadt als Campus“ ist das Motto der Urban School Ruhr (USR). Als eine Lernplattform und ein pädagogisches Experiment, untersucht USR partizipative und künstlerische Praxen im urbanen Raum. Sie wird als unabhängige öffentliche Institution angesehen: eine Versammlung von Menschen, die sich um ein gemeinsames Interesse gruppiert.

Als Bildungsrahmen bietet die USR unmittelbare Begegnungen mit einer breit gestreuten Anzahl von kulturellen und räumlichen Produzenten. Durch kooperative Unterrichtsmodelle und diverse Formate sollen Gegenseitigkeit sowie eine aktive Beteiligung am Lernprozess geschaffen werden.

Während der Frühlings- und Sommersession, umfasst der USR Lehrplan Exkursionen in europäische Städte (Paris, Marseille, Athen und Liverpool). Darauffolgend wird im Herbst ein Freies Programm in den Städten Witten und Hattingen durchgeführt. Es beschäftigt sich mit der Gegenwart und der Zukunft des Ruhrgebiets und gliedert sich um drei Hauptthemen: Orte des Lernens, Gemeinschaftspraxen und Intervenieren als Strategie. Teil der USR Aktivitäten wird vom USR Staff zusammen mit lokalen und internationalen Tutoren sowie verbundenen Bildungspartnern vermittelt. Um den offenen Geist zu reflektieren, ist es allerdings jedem ermöglicht sich mit einem Vorschlag im Lehrplan einzubringen.

Die USR ist kostenlos und für alle frei zugänglich.
