Modelling futures

Shaped to the Measure of the People’s Songs

For the reopening of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt HKW in Berlin’s Tiergarten, the new team is introducing an annual series of pavilions. As a place for spontaneous encounters in the park and as a platform for planned events and discussions, the pavilion activates the outdoor areas in front of the HKW. On the public lawn in front of the museum, the triangular Pavilion provides visitors open access from all sides.

Symbiosen

For the Fragile Festival at the Pina Bausch Zentrum in Wuppertal, raumlabor and Raul Walch have created symbiotic structures and garments out of trash. Together with a group of participants, a pavilion was created out of old furniture and discarded wood. Inspired by the way the nature of Wuppertal encroaches on the built environment, the project aims to blur the boundaries between the living, the artificial and the discarded. With the help of the AWG trash company, we have been collecting old furniture, wood and textiles, to give them new life. Gradually, these materials have been transformed into new structures, as well as characters who inhabit this space – all while merging with both each other and the existing environment.

Forms of assembly

collaboration and co-habitation are core conditions of all life. It’s about being together, exchanging, producing, decaying, opening up and giving way. Life is about different dynamics coming together. We like to see the city as a form of assembly. Beyond that, our whole planet with its critical zone or biofilm surface, this the thin layer of life surrounding the planet is living together in a potentially unique way in the cosmos, therfore the biggest scale of assembly. If we zoom in, we find the city and if we zoom in more, we see individual living beings, zooming into one of us humans, we discover, that our bodies themselves are universes of cohabitation and exchange. We are no single, autonomous beings, but rather large assemblies of body cells that exchange DNA across from bacteria to human and back.

[Working on] Common Ground

Common Ground_plan_with text_230715

The Brick Factory is Prishtina’s largest post-industrial site. Having been placed under the administration of Kosovo’s Privatisation Agency in 2007, it was returned to public ownership by the Municipality of Prishtina in 2021. The future of the site lies in the hands of the citizens. Will it become a new cultural hub, as foreseen by the municipality? What kind of culture would it support? Would such a hub follow existing models or pioneer new ones? The discussion is only just beginning.

Making Futures Book

What role might architecture—and the architect—play in the twenty-first century? What possibilities arise when we view architecture as a form of agency rather than as a collection of objects? What spatial dynamics emerge when we turn our practices away from the dictates of the neoliberal era with its obsession with growth and skimming off profit? Since 2018, Making Futures has sought ways to answer these questions through practice-based research across disciplines, institutions, and territories.

Holy Temple of Siegen

The Hüttentalstraße (abbrev. HTS) is a city highway that was built in the 1970’s and has had a decisive influence on the surrounding cityscape. Due to its topographical location, the HTS was built on massive, concrete stilts and extends over the entire city area. A large part of Siegen’s population lives in the immediate vicinity of the HTS.

Fake Estate

FAKE ESTATE was inspired by Gordon Matta Clark. It is an effective tool for urban practice, that reuses the platform of a damaged construction trailer. The new design was conceived to meet the definition of the Building Code for Berlin for buildings that do not require a permit (§61 BauOBerlin). It is a radical statement that Urban Practice is not based on property, we must think about it as agile and tactical. It is an active form that establishes a constant connection to its context and serves at the same time as protected space. more

Deep Encounter

Deep Encounter is a floating pavilion built for the biennale „sonsbeek20→24: force times distance ⏤ on labour and its sonic ecologies“. It serves as a social gathering space and seeks to give equal consideration to both humans and nature in the park. The floating pavilion exists in nature but outside of its rules. Aside from the fact that it floats, the pavilion takes on a very artificial character. The round polygon shape of the Pavilion, a crystal-like constellation of triangles, is meant to emphasise its man-made qualities—floating starkly just off the shore of Grote Vijver, the park’s biggest pond.

FLOATING UNIVERSITY e.V.

In 2018, Floating University Berlin was initiated by raumlabor as a temporary inner-city laboratory for collective, experiential learning and transdisciplinary exchange.

The founding year of the Floating University saw a diverse breadth of visitors involved to varying degrees with the activity on site, creating a unique ecosystem. The program consolidated a network of practitioners, who towards the end of 2018 decided to continue the experiment by transitioning from a ‘temporary’ project into an association: Floating University e.V.
